Within food science a carbohydrate refers to any food containing starch (which is a complex carbohydrate) such as cereals, bread and pasta or foods which contain simple carbohydrates in the form of sugar, such as sweets and desserts. Carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of energy. If the body does not consume enough carbohydrates during exercise it starts to break down fat and muscle (catabolism) for energy.
There are four types of carbohydrates: sugars (one or two glucose units), oligosaccharides (between 3 and 9 glucose units), starches (several thousand glucose units) and fibre. Sugars and oligosaccharides broken down faster than starches and result in a fast peak in blood sugar levels.
The body needs about 50g carbohydrate per hour of physical activity (for events of longer than 90 minutes) to sustain energy levels and prevent muscle breakdown. Our carbohydrate powder is the perfect way to optimise your carb levels during any workout, physical activity or training session.
